Why are stem cells so important?

From the moment of birth, our bodies slowly begin to degenerate.  To combat the effects of degeneration, we all have stem cells and other regenerative cells that are involved in natural healing and repair processes.  As we age, however, the concentration of our own regenerative cells as well as their ability to effectively counter the effects of degeneration diminishes with each passing year.  For this reason, umbilical cord tissue can be used as an allograft to assist a patient’s own regenerative cells in augmenting the healing response.

Umbilical Cell Therapy Q&A

What is Umbilical Cell Therapy?

Umbilical Cell Therapy is a safe and effective regenerative treatment that uses substances found in the Wharton’s Jelly layer of the umbilical cord to enhance your body’s natural repair and regenerative processes.  No fetal or embryonic tissue is used for Umbilical Cell Therapy.

The donor umbilical cord tissue used in this process is obtained from consenting moms in the United States who have delivered healthy babies via an elective cesarean section.  Advances in medical technology and techniques now enable the extraction of regenerative cells from the cord tissue, which would normally be discarded after delivery, that triggers your body’s production of stem cells, growth factors, and other healing substances.

The cord tissue is harvested immediately after birth and run through a rigorous, FDA-controlled testing process to ensure it’s free of contaminants or disease.  The material we use for Umbilical Cell Therapy is then carefully extracted, prepared, and stored at donor facilities in a form that can be delivered via injection into the problem areas such as arthritic joints.  See the product process chart below:

How does Umbilical Cell Therapy work?

Umbilical Cell Therapy takes advantage of elements found in donor tissue that are important to joint and spine health.  These naturally occurring substances include:

  • Regenerative cells, including stem cells, that your body uses to heal and rebuild
  • Enzymes and other natural elements necessary for providing the lubricating substances like hyaluronic acid that keep your joints moving freely
  • Anti-inflammatory cytokines that relieve pain and inflammation and attract regenerative cells, including stem cells, to the damaged area
  • Cellular growth factors that build new joint tissue
  • Proteins, such as collagen, that create a natural framework for the cellular restoration processes

Which conditions can be treated with Umbilical Cell Therapy?

Delivered via an ultrasound guided in-office injection that is essentially painless, we often recommend Umbilical Cell Therapy for chronic joint pain in the following areas:

  • Knees
  • Hips
  • Feet
